What are Region Codes?

Region Codes or Encoding, is a system that was implemented by motion picture studios to control regional playback and distribution of media titles. Many DVD players are or can be modified to be 'region-free' allowing playback of all discs from all regions. There are 7 main regions.

  • Region 0: Worldwide or Uncoded
  • Region 1: USA & Canada
  • Region 2: Western & Central Europe (UK), Japan, South Africa and Western Asia
  • Region 3: South East Asia, South Korea and non-mainland China (Hong Kong)
  • Region 4: Oceania (Australia & New Zealand), Central & South America, Caribbean & Mexico
  • Region 5: Ukraine, Belarus, Russia, Africa, Central & South Asia, Mongolia and North Korea
  • Region 6: Mainland China

Most, if not all of our DVDs are Region 2 or 0. Details of the product's region will be on the Item's Detail page.

What about Blu-ray Discs?

The encoding of Blu-ray Discs is not the same as DVD region coding. Again, different territories have different region codes to control the different aspects of the release. Even though there are 3 regions most of the major studios have been releasing Blu-ray Discs as region free.

  • Region A: East Asia (except mainland China & Mongolia), Southeast Asia, North America and South America
  • Region B: Europe (except Russia & Kazakhstan), Oceania (Australia & New Zealand), Africa and Southwest Asia
  • Region C: Central Asia, East Asia (Mainland China & Mongolia only), South Asia and central Eurasia

Most, if not all of our Blu-ray Discs are Region B or region-free. Details of the product's region will be on the 'Item Details' page.

What about HD-DVD?

Although HD-DVD is now a discontinued format, it is good to be aware that there is no region coding applied to the HD-DVD format media.

What does NTSC or PAL mean?

NTSC and PAL are what define the different frame rates, mains supply and colour systems used by different countries. Although nearly all of our items will be PAL, if you are purchasing an NTSC version please ensure that your television is compatible and vice-versa.

What is Aspect Ratio?

The aspect ratio of an image is its width divided by its height. From the start of Television, the standard Ratio was 4:3, but as time has gone by, the industry standard has moved to 16:9 to accommodate for all the different ratios in between. The ratio is only a guide and does not mean you will not be able to view the item.

What is Age Rating/Certification?

The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) rates both motion pictures and videos in th UK. Films may receive a different rating when released on Blu-ray/DVD than the cinema rating. It is our legal obligation to abide by the rating system.

  • E: Exempt from BBFC classification, typically non-fiction content such as sporting highlights, fitness videos, nature films and documentaries
  • Uc: Universal: Children; Suitable for all. Videos classified 'Uc' are particularly suitable for pre-school children.
  • U: Universal; Suitable for all. The board state that while they cannot predict what might upset a particular child, a 'U' film should be suitable for audiences aged 4 and over.
  • PG: Parental Guidance. General viewing, but some scenes may be unsuitable for young children.
Unaccompanied children of any age may watch. A 'PG' film should not disturb a child aged around eight or older. However, parents are advised to consider whether the content may upset younger or more sensitive children.
  • 12: Suitable for 12 years and over. No one younger than 12 may rent or buy a '12' rated video.
  • 15: Suitable only for 15 years and over. No one younger than 15 may rent or buy a '15' rated video.
  • 18: Restricted 18. Suitable only for Adults. No one younger than 18 may rent or buy an '18' rated video.
  • R18: Can only be purchased in licensed sex shops by adults not less than 18 years of age.

Royal Mail state on their website that they deliver most First Class mail by the next working day, including Saturdays, but items of mail may occasionally be delayed in their system for a number of reasons. We recommend that you go through the following process before submitting a claim.
